  1. A bison is a large, hoofed MAMMAL. There are 
  2. two species, both brown. The European bison 
  3. or wisent Bison bonasus, of which only a few
  4. protected herds survive. They measure about 
  5. 2m (7ft) in hight and can weigh up to 1,100kg
  6. (2,500lb). The North American bison is often 
  7. known as a BUFFALO.
